
KUALA LUMPUR, JANUARY 14: A lawyer and a former political secretary for jailed former finance minister Anwar Ibrahim were indicted today as Malaysia8217;s government came under mounting criticism for a crackdown on the opposition.
Lawyer and politician Karpal Singh and Mohamed Ezam Mohamednor, Anwar8217;s former top political aide and youth leader of the opposition Parti Keadilan Nasional, pleaded not guilty at their appearances in separate courts.
Karpal was charged in the capital8217;s sessions court for violating the sedition act and released on a 3,000 Ringgit 790 dollar bail.
Mohamed Ezam was indicted under the official secrets act in the magistrate8217;s court in Petaling Jaya on the outskirts of the capital and released on 7,000 Ringgit bail.
Small groups of supporters outside each courthouse briefly shouted 8220;reformasi8221; reform 8212; the rallying cry of Anwar8217;s backers 8212; as Karpal and Ezam emerged.
They were among five people arrested this week in a move against opposition politicians and the Parti Islam Se-Malaysia8217;s newspaper, Harakah. The arrests have been denounced by opposition parties, human rights groups and press watchdog organisations.
