Australian fast bowler Brett Lee said Friday he is still hopeful of a World Cup appearance despite sustaining torn ligaments in his left ankle.
8220;The good news is that I don8217;t have to have an operation,8221; Lee said after returning from New Zealand, where he injured his ankle in training Thursday.
8220;There are torn ligaments in my left ankle and yesterday I was in a lot of pain. When I went down I heard a crack in my ankle and things weren8217;t looking good. After consulting with the doctor today I am more positive, but it8217;s too hard to say what the outcome will be.8221;
Australian medical staff said they8217;ll have to wait at least another week before making a decision on Lee8217;s availability for the World Cup, which begins next month in the Caribbean. Meanwhile, officials said batsman Michael Clarke will return to Sydney after not recovering sufficiently from hip soreness while in New Zealand.
