SURAT, May 11: A group of people clubbed a man to death and seriously injured his companion on Sunday morning, the police said. The two were trying to extort money from a paan-shop owner at Patelwadi in the Mahidharpura area of the city, the police added.

Trouble began on Sunday morning when two armed men, Bhailal Bhaggu and Chhagan Rathod, both residents of Gotalawadi area of the city approached a paan shop belonging to one Vijay Vasant and allegedly demanded money from him.

But when Vasant raised an alarm, Bharatbhai Madhubhai, Devidas Narayan, Mahesh Ramchandra, Shivaji Vasant and two others reached the spot armed with pipes and sticks. They clubbed Bhaggu to death and seriously injured Rathod. The Mahidharpura police reached the spot and rushed Rathod to the New Civil Hospital later.

The police have also arrested five people in this connection and have registered cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and rioting against them. Complaints were registered by both parties involved in the brawl against each other in the Mahidharpura police station.
