LINARES, MARCH 11: Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand scored a fine last round win over Michael Adams of England to join Russian Vladimir Kramnik on second position at the City of Linares chess tournament here Wednesday night.

World number two Anand, who won this tournament last year, collected eight points, same as Kramnik. Both were 2.5 points behind Garry Kasparov — the runaway winner.

Kramnik, ranked third in the world, played out a draw in his last round game with Peter Leko of Hungary.

Anand, who has a remarkable success rate against Adams, was brilliant in the English game with white pieces. Adams looked tired and lost his way in the middle game.

In other last round matches, which all went past the first time control, Kasparov drew with Vasselin Topalov of Bulgaria in 68 moves while Vassily Ivanchuk (Ukraine) and Peter Svidler (Russia) battled it out for 69 moves before deciding to spilt points.

Kasparov and Topalov were engaged in a Kings Indian game but both agreed for a truce. Clearly Kasparov wanted to close the tournament with a win, but the Bulgarian held his fort splendidly.

The Linares crown for Kasparov — a back-to-back win for the Russian after his Hoogovens triumph in Wijk Aan Zee last month — has again proved the chess wizard is indeed world champion.
