FEBRUARY 16: It was a nostalgic night as Mumbai Ranji players right from Vasant Raiji the oldest living Mumbai Ranji player to Rajesh Pawar the youngest in absence of Pushkaraj Jadhav gathered at the CK Nayudu Hall of the Cricket Club of India CCI for a great evening of remembering the good old days.
The 80-year old Vasant Raiji was beaming with pride, while resurrecting the Ranji Trophy win in 1941, while in another corner of the hall the great Sunil Gavaskar was catching up with old mates Padmakar Shivalkar and Milind Rege. A few feet away Sachin Tendulkar was getting sound advice from the old guards which included Sanjay Manjrekar and Dilip Vengsarkar.
The stalwarts of Mumbai cricket had got together thanks to the Pratap Trust chairman Chhatrapalsing Jadeja, who had organised a dinner to honour all those Mumbai crickters who had won the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai for a record 33 times, yesterday night.
The bonhomie among the players could be seen to be believed. Vengsarkar beamed, 8220;it is fantastic. I am meeting some of my old mates after decades. I just cannot describe the way I am feeling.8221;
Right from Vasant Raiji, KL Ibrahim, Madhav Mantri and Russi Cooper the only surviving members of the 1941 Ranji Trophy winning mumbai team, to Bapu Nadkarni, Polly Umrigar, GS Ramchand, Sunil Gavaskar, Ashok Mankad, Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Milind Rege, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Sanjay Manjrekar to the present lot conmprising Indian captain Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Jatin Paranjpe, Sairaj Bahutule, Abey Kuruvilla, Rajesh Pawar and many more they were all there.
