MUMBAI, April 14: Crowds thronged Chaitya Bhoomi at Dadar today, where Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar had, along with over a lakh Dalits, converted to Buddhism in 1956. On the occasion of Dr Ambedkar8217;s 107th birth anniversary, various cultural programmes were held in the city.

The Republican Party of India organised a padyatra from Kurla to Chembur and a rickshaw rally in Chembur. 8220;The padyatris carried a torch to symbolize the flame of knowledge and truth,8221; said Madhukar Kamble, an RPI member. The People8217;s Education Society, founded by Ambedkar, conducted a meeting at a college run by the society at Wadala, where the contributions made by the architect of the Indian Constitution were discussed. Cultural programmes were also held at Chembur, Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar, Ghatkopar, Wadala, Parel and the western suburbs.
