PUNE, June 3: In what proved to be a see-saw battle, Pune City Police pulled the rug from under Priyadarshini Sports Club PSC A8221;s feet to enter the final of the III President8217;s Cup Hockey Championship. At the Ammunition Factory, Kirkee AFK Ground here today, Raja Shaktivelu8217;s failed attempt in the sudden death enabled the City cops to edge out PSC 8-7 after being locked 1-1 in the stipulated time and then 4-4 in the tie-breaker.

It will be an all cops affair in the final to be played tomorrow where City Police will be rubbing shoulders with Railway Police, who on Tuesday had beaten OBA 3-1.

City Police jumped into the lead in the 16th minute through the penalty corner converted by their right-in Sanjay Muthaiya. This was the cops8217; first penalty corner out of the two they earned in the entire match, the second one being in the 51st minute which they failed to capitalise on. PSC shot back into the reckoning five minutes before the lemon break through a field goal scored by left-in Sanjay Pollaiya. It was a brilliant combination between right-half Raja and right-out Vijay Benedict who penetrated into the D and gave a minus to Sanjay who was waiting at the penalty spot, in a flash beat the PSC custodian all ends up.

The teams went 1-all into the half-time and could not improve upon that in the second part of the match. Although PSC were more dominant of the two teams, they failed to capitalise on the opportunities which came towards them. PSC8217;s domination could be gauged from the fact that they forced eight penalty corners to the two of City Police.

In the tie-breaker, Harish Sapkal, Bashir Sayyed, Ganesh Muthaiyya scored for the winners while for PSC, Vimal Benedict, Raja and Sachin Pawar converted successfully. In the sudden death, which saw a see-saw battle going on between the two teams, first Bashir and Ganesh sounded the boards for the cops with Raja and Vimal doing the same for PSC. After reaching a deadlock of 7-7, Ganesh scored the eventual winner as Raja miscued his attempt.
