
NEW DELHI, June 2: The government today denied that the long-awaited Rs 2,000- crore airport expansion plan in Delhi was in jeopardy as the Airport Authority of India AAI had yet to acquire land from villages around the airport.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Civil Aviation Minister Ananth Kumar said land had already been around the airport. But within the airport area there were some villages which were not with the AAI but were needed for operational requirements and construction of cargo facilities.
Action had been initiated to take over the required land and to rehabilitate the affected people in the alternate sites developed by DDA, the minister said.
Telephone directories: MTNL has brought the telephone directory for Delhi on CD-Rom, which is readily available at all customer service centres.
Regarding the book form, a letter of intent has been issued to a firm, minister of state for communications Kabindra Purkayastha said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The telephone directories for MTNL were last issued in December, 1994.
As soon as the firm completes the pre-contract formalities, the contract will be awarded and progressive delivery of directories is to commence after six months from the date of award for of the contract.
Protection: Delhi police was providing security to 392 people under different categories of protection and the total number of people deployed for security purposes was 6,200, Home Minister L.K. Advani said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The total expenditure incurred by Delhi police on the security of these people was Rs 27.85 crore in 1997-98
.Begging: Efforts to repatriate 6313 beggars, who had come to the capital from other states, have not been successful, social welfare minister Maneka Gandhi said in the Lok Sabha. It was the responsibility of the Delhi government to remove the beggars from Delhi, she added.
Murder-kidnapping: Kidnappings came down by 43 and lootings by 50 between January one and April 30 this year as compared to the same period last year. As against 155 murders last year there were 156 this year, Home Minister L.K. Advani told the Lok Sabha.
Delhi Police: Criminal cases have been registered against two Delhi police personnel this year, who misbehaved with women. In one incident a constable tried to molest a woman in Kalkaji and in the other a constable misbehaved with a woman in a cinema hall. However, there was no instance of misbehaviour with a female security personnel, the Home Minister said in a written reply.
Forged visas: A racket in forged visas had been unearthed in Delhi during March and three people had been arrested. The three used to get printed visa stickers from Chennai which were then pasted on to the passports, the Home Minister said.
Pre-paid service: The traffic unit of Delhi police keeps a close watch on police personnel posted at the pre-paid booths outside New Delhi railway station and action is taken if they are found guilty of causing harassment to the public, the Home Minister said in another written reply.
