MUMBAI, AUG 18: Air-India put a sequence of three draws and the defeat to Bank of India behind them, as they won their concluding tie to top the table with 18 points in the Gulf Oil WIFA Super Division Football League. Today at the Cooperage, they scored through Godfred Pereira and Herbert Philips in the second half.

Bengal Mumbai FC, with 16 points from eight matches, have a chance to edge Air-India out from the top spot, but the airmen are ensured of a place in the second stage, to which the top five teams from the league will advance.In another match, Central Bank, who were occupying the cellar position, moved up a rung with a victory of Fr Agnel. Amol Ayare scored the winning goal. It was Central Bank8217;s first win.

Borzin nets brace

Borzin Irani scored both goals as St. Xavier8217;s, Fort defeated Holy Family 2-1 in the under-16 Division I relegation match in the MSSA-Colgate Inter-Schools Football League at Azad Maidan here today.

HR thrash Marathe

HR Commerce ambushed Acharya Marathe 7-0 in the second round of the inter-college football tournament at the Mumbai Schools ground, Azad Maidan, today. Avinash Shetty, Abhishek Joshi, Kris Gomes, Ambrish Adhikari Imran Chaiwala 2 and Juneed Ansari scored. In another match, Clinton Travasso struck four goals to give Elphinstone a 5-0 win over Byramjee. K Pillay scored the fifth.

BEST triumph

BEST defeated BMMPKB 2-0 in the MDFA Chhatrapati Shivaji Trophy Division I-B football league at the St Xavier8217;s ground, Parel, today. Dominic Pereira scored off a pass by Santosh Athikari to give BEST the lead in the second-half. Trevor Nunes was responsible for the second goal. Earlier in the evening, Mukesh Solanki scored the match-winner for Adarsh against Larsen and Toubro in Pool A.

Suvarna for Bangladesh

The Asian Football Confederation AFC has appointed Madhav Suvarna as the referees inspector for the Second Banglabandu International Football Tournament to be played in Bangladesh from August 27-September 7.

Teams from Brazil, Ghana, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, India South Korea, and Thailand are participating in the event.
