The Asom Gana Parishad AGP, which has been suffering from internal bickerings that even led to a section casting votes in the presidential polls despite the party8217;s decision to abstain, on Monday announced it would bring all regional splinter groups under one umbrella to tackle the Congress.
The AGP on Monday appointed a sub-committee to carry out this 8220;important effort8221; with its President Brindaban Goswami saying it was necessary that regional voters were kept united for the benefit of the people of the state.
8220;The Congress has failed miserably. We thought the Congress8212;with the Bodo People8217;s Progressive Front as its ally8212;would perform better during Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi8217;s second term. But things are going from bad to worse,8221; Goswami said.
He spoke of the 8220;incursions8221; into the Assam territory by Nagaland and also about Arunachal Pradesh pushing out hundreds of suspected Bangladeshi migrants into Assam. He said that the Gogoi Government had been quiet about these incidents.
8220;How can a Chief Minister choose to remain silent when a neighbouring state is encroaching on your territory and killing and plundering its villages? How can the Assam Government sit idle when Arunachal Pradesh is using Assam as a dumping ground for Bangladeshi migrants?8221; asked the AGP President.
Other breakaway factions of the AGP that Goswami hopes to include are the Trinamul Gana Parishad headed by former Speaker Pulakesh Barua and former PWD Minister Atul Bora, and Purbanchaliya Loka Parishad headed by former minister Pabinfra Deka.
