Pakistan8217;s Auditor General has come out with a sensational disclosure in which millions of dollars donated by expatriate countrymen vanished without trace while being transferred from overseas to Islamabad.
In its special audit report on revenue receipts of Pakistan mission abroad from 1997-98 and 2000-01, the report, submitted to President General Pervez Musharraf said 8216;8216;the banks in England either did not give any reply or provided information which was unbelievable,8217;8217; the report quoted by US-based Pakistani weekly South Asia Tribune said.
The successive civilian governments in Pakistan asked expatriate Pakistanis to donate for three special funds 8212; Kashmir Relief Fund started by Benazir Bhutto, Flood Relief Fund started by Nawaz Sharief and Drought Relief Fund by Pervez Musharraf.
The weekly reported that Musharraf, caught in a trap and bracketed with the two leading politicians he calls corrupt, had done nothing but to brush the scandal under the carpet by referring it to non-existent public accounts committee.
8216;8216;The lack of interest in the Musharraf government speaks of a hidden fear that if this issue was probed deeply it may turn out to be a much bigger embarrassment than anyone can imagine,8217;8217; the weekly said.
The audit report quoted an instance that in 1997 8216;8216;a receipt bearing serial number 13 containing 100 receipts was issued to Fazlur Rehman, Pakistan director Haj, in Madina, Saudi Arabia for collection of self reliance fund on behalf of the Nawaz Sharief government.8217;8217;
8216;8216;The officer neither deposited the amount nor did he return the used or unused receipts. Thus, the amount collected, if any, was available with him, unaccounted, for the last four or five years,8217;8217; the weekly said.
