After the state government withdrew its consent to support Panjab University8217;s bid for central varsity status, now it seems to be the turn of the Panjab University Teachers8217; Association PUTA to perform a volte-face.

PUTA president, Ronki Ram, told Newsline: 8220;All we want are funds for the university; we have no issues whether PU is awarded central status or not. We are completely in favour of a united Punjab.8221;

This is a complete flip from PUTA8217;s earlier stand of demanding central status for the varsity. In fact, PUTA was to observe Teachers8217; Day as a black day in protest against the government8217;s decision today but the plan was shelved at the last minute.

Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti had presented similar views during a Senate meeting in March where he said PU would welcome complete central funding. He was, however, opposed by a section of senators who had supported the demand for central varsity status.

But there are some who are still firm on the demand. Former PUTA general secretary Professor Manjit Singh said: 8220;We were and shall always be for the central varsity status for PU. But now, if PUTA has decided that it is content with just central funds, it is their decision. I would not like to comment on that.8221;
