
Defaulting father, avenging son
A youth created a sleazy profile of a female excise official, posted it on Orkut and used it to harass her, his revenge for a notice the official had sent his to pay up dues amounting to several lakh rupees, the police said.
The profile on Orkut portrayed the excise official as a call girl and she got to know of it when she started receiving calls. 8220;She complained to the police, a case was registered at Dindoshi police station on Monday and the cyber crime cell started a probe. The profile on Orkut showed her as a call girl soliciting customers and even mentioned her mobile number on the website. She started receiving calls from strangers at odd hours of the day; that is when she realised what had happened,8221; said a police officer.
The cyber crime investigation cell CCIC of the crime branch tracked down the culprit by tracing the Internet protocol address he had used while posting the profile.
Kovid Patil 20 of Goregaon East was arrested on Monday. The cyber crime investigation cell CCIC of the crime branch booked him under the Indian Penal Code for acts intending to outrage the modesty of a woman, and under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. He was produced at Esplanade Court on Tuesday and remanded to police custody till November 10.
8220;The motive was to create pressure on the excise official and harass her. In her capacity as an excise officer, she had served a notice to Kovid8217;s father Hemant Sadanand Patil, asking him to pay up Rs13 lakh. Hemant Patil runs a company called Technocrat India that manufactures components for the automotive, agriculture, earth moving and defence sectors. His son helps in the business and tried to stall the payment of the dues. When this failed to deter the excise official, he posted the sleazy profile,8221; said the police officer.
