Afghanistan is prepared to take more of the burden in combating terrorists and Taliban rebels but still needs international help, President Hamid Karzai said on Thursday.
“Is it time to leave Afghanistan? No,” Karzai said at a news conference with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
“Is it time to add more responsibility to the Afghan people? Yes.”
Karzai said the international intervention in his country, led by the US and Britain, “has got us magnificent results,” but much remains to be done.
“Therefore, for us to complete successfully the journey we have undertaken we need to remain committed. While that commitment by the international community is necessary and important, we must also concentrate on reducing the burden from the international community and adding more of that to the shoulders of Afghanistan,” Karzai said.
