The Centre is devising strategies to tackle fidayeen suicide attacks by terrorists, Deputy PM L.K. Advani said today.
He was referring to Tuesday8217;s attack on Amarnath pilgrims while chairing the meeting of the consultative committee attached to the Home Ministry. Advani expressed concern on repeated attacks despite the 8216;8216;best of security arrangements8217;8217;.
Special Secretary J-K A.K. Bhandari, who visited the site, briefed committee members. Committee members, including CPIM8217;s Somnath Chatterjee, Muslim League8217;s G.M. Banatwala, Independent Shankar Roy Choudhury, and NC8217;s Ali Mohammad Naik, asked if there was any security lapse. The Centre said better coordination between various security agencies was the need of the hour.
The committee discussed insurgency sponsored from across the border in J-K and 8216;8216;inborn insurgency8217;8217; in the country8217;s North-East. Members said the North-East suffered from high unemployment. 8216;8216;The Government should itself take up development programmes which can benefit the people,8217;8217; members from the region, Joyanta Rongpi, Holkhomang Haokip and Rajkumar Wangcha, said.
Advani said the Centre8217;s peace initiative in the North-East was not tactical. The Centre, he said, would address the region8217;s core issues sincerely and ensure all-round development. This was why a separate ministry under a Cabinet minister was created, Advani said.
A presentation was made on the steps being taken to curb North-East militancy and the Centre8217;s efforts to push development.
