PANAJI, JUNE 2: In contrast to Defence Minister George Fernandes8217; clean chit to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif over the near war-like situation at Kargil, Home Minister L K Advani on Wednesday blamed the Pakistan leader for the confrontation.
The Home Minister who arrived in Goa to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP accused the Pakistan Government of resorting to desperate measures for resurrecting insurgency. Advani was reacting to Fernandes8217; reported statement that the Pakistan Army alone prepared and implemented the Kargil operation and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was not aware of these plans.
The Home Minister said, Kashmiris were taken to Pakistan and trained to carry out terrorism in the State. Later when the number of local volunteers fell, Pakistan inducted foreign mercenaries to spread terrorism in Kashmir, Advani said adding, now in the third stage, Pakistani army regulars are infiltrating into Kashmir.
Advani also severely criticised the Congress for letting things slide in Kashmir. Till the Vajpayee Government took over in 1998, the National flag could not be hoisted in Kashmir, the Home Minister said. He also accused the Congress of covering up its failure to tackle the Kashmir conflict by blaming the latest infiltration by Pakistanis on Intelligence failure.
Earlier while addressing public meetings in Ponda and Bicholim assembly segments Advani said, Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi8217;s foreign origin would be one of the issue in the Lok Sabha polls. Besides, the BJP would also seek to bar persons of foreign origin from holding top positions in the country by amending the Constitution, the Home Minister added.
