CHANDIGARH, Nov 1: The next millennium will see better equipment material for ENT surgeons along with faster communication, which will have a positive impact and right exposure for the next generation of surgeons.This was stated by Prof S.K. Kacker, former director, AIIMS, on the final day of the two-day conference of ENT surgeons at PGI. The 23 Annual Conference of Association of ENT Surgeons of India, North Western Zone Branch, which was inaugurated on Sunday discussed the scope, reforms and latest advances in ENT surgery. The conference was inaugurated by former director PGI, Dr P.N.S. Walia, who spoke on the need for early diagnosis of ENT problems in children to lower the incidence of deafness and speech problems."The term medical care refers to not only medicine, but also the care that is essential to treat patients. But unfortunately this personal touch is somehow lacking in medical profession today," said Dr Walia.In today's scientific session Prof S.K. Kacker discussed his views regarding ENT as a profession in the next century. "With the development of technology and liberal economic policies, it is likely that next generation of ENT surgeons will use synthetic bio-materials which are used for implantations in the body."Prof R.C. Decka, chief of ENT, AIIMS, stressed on the role of endoscopic surgery in Antro Choanal Polyp. Prof Arun Aggarwal, chief of ENT, in Maulana Azad Hospital, Delhi, talked about the problems in which the fluid surrounded the brain through a defect in the bony base of skull."This increases the chances of infection reaching the sensitive area of brain which can have grave consequences. Early detection in such cases is of utmost importance as many lives rest on early detection," said Dr Aggarwal. The Khosla Gold Medal Award for original research in deafness in children was given to Dr Rohit Sharma from Shimla. A panel discussion on "Discharging Ears" was also held which was moderated by Prof M.L.Sharma of Shimla.A quiz competition was also held, which was arranged by Dr Achal Gulati, Dr Ashok Gupta and Dr Vikas Nehru, the organising secretary of the Association.Four teams from different medical colleges of the region participated in the quiz. The conference was attended by as many as 200 delegates. E day Dr O.N.Bhakoo talked about the extra care the delicate frame of babies need at the time of birth and soon after. Dr Anil Narang of Department of Neo-Natology talked about neo natal care. "An essential thing is to take proper care of the developing foetus and for this regular check ups of the mother and proper track on the growing foetus is required," said Dr Narang.In his lecture Dr Suneet Singhi Incharge Emergency APC, PGI discussed child health in India and provided current status available.
