PANCHKULA, Dec 13: A colourful cultural programme by inmates marked the 15th anniversary celebrations of the Bal Niketan, a home for orphans and destitute children, here today.

Presiding over the function, Haryana Chief Secretary, R.S. Varma said that the social security department should act as a catalyst in the functioning of the institution and it should release requisite grants towards this end.

Varma also pledged to donate Rs 1,000 to this institution from his own funds.

The Bal Niketan, which was set up by the S.O.S Children8217;s Village Association at a cost of Rs 45 lakh, houses about 70 children who are provided all necessities, including education and vocational training, till they are rehabilitated in life.

Till now 20 inmates have been rehabilitated and four girls have been married off. In addition, over the last eight years about 500 boys and girls from economically weaker sections have been given vocational training like secretarial practice, computer applications, repair of electrical and electronic appliances, dress designing and tailoring.
