Also, why not ask for the number of Muslim patriots who have in the last 50 years sacrificed their lives for the motherland? When will our leading lights stop flaunting their label of 8216;secularism8217;? It is time indeed that the two words 8216;secular8217; and 8216;communal8217; are deleted from our dictionary for good, and anyone using religion for any purpose punished.

8226; As news of deaths due to the 8216;toon controversy8217; trickle in, we need to rethink the concept of free speech. If we give ourselves the fundamental right to free speech we must respect another8217;s fundamental right to peace and security. The 8216;cartoon episode8217; has violated this. Reprinting of the cartoons was not an airing of liberal views 8212; it was deliberate and provocative assault on religious sentiments with full knowledge of the possible consequences. Free speech in a civil society needs a conscience and must be within a framework. It must not result in the destruction of peaceful and innocent lives. The law must find a way to prevent this.

8226; The Supreme Court decision that all marriages should be validated through registration is praiseworthy. However, the modus operandi has to be carefully framed to ensure that the very purpose of such an order does not get defeated. For example, the sequence needs to be stipulated 8212; whether it should follow or precede the conventional marriage ceremony. If the registration of a marriage is to take place after the conventional ceremony, either of the party may delay it on one pretext or the other.
