Results announced at a function in Lisbon late Saturday night, seven from the shortlist of 21 modern wonders made it, including the Taj Mahal

Great Wall China: Created in the 5th century BC to protect the northern borders of Chinese Empire. Is world8217;s longest human-made structure, stretching over 6,400 km.

Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro Brazil: The statue of Jesus Christ is 105 ft tall and weighs 700 tonnes. Located at the peak of the 2,296 ft Corcovado mountain, overlooking Rio.

Machu Picchu Peru: City created by the Inca on a mountain ridge. Machu Picchu was forgotten for centuries by the world, until brought to attention by archaeologist Hiram Bingham in 1911.

Petra Jordan: Site with many giant stone structures carved into the rock. Revealed to the Western world by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812.

Chichen Itza Mexico: Large archaeological site originally built by the Maya civilization. Historical data suggest that Chichen Itza8217;s collapse was violent.

Taj Mahal Agra: White marble mausoleum considered the finest example of Mughal architecture. Commissioned by Shah Jahan for wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Constructed between 1632-1648.

Colosseum Rome, Italy: Giant amphitheatre capable of seating around 50,000 spectators. Constructed between 70 AD and 80 AD, and used for nearly 500 years for a variety of events.
