A 55-year-old man had to pay with his life on Saturday night when he tried to intervene in a quarrel over a petty custard apple.

According to a complaint by Hasmukh Pagi, his seven-year-old son had plucked a custard apple from a tree belonging to Gordhan Pagi, Shamji Pagi and Raju Pagi. The three started quarreling with Hasmukh over the issue.

Mathurbhai Pagi, their neighbour, and a resident of Godhavata village, intervened with an intention to calm them down. But the angry trio charged at him. One of them attacked him with the scythe, while the other two strangulated him.

Sub-Inspector G P Patel of Barwala police said the victim was rushed to the nearby hospital, but died on the way.

The Barwala police have registered a case of murder. Investigations are on to nab the three.
