Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee may not be comfortable with disruptions of the House proceedings much too often, but he has taken the initiative to launch an internship programme to apprise five outstanding post-graduates of the parliamentary system.
According to Lok Sabha secretary-general P D T Achary, the one-year programme would enable the interns to understand the Parliament working as a multi-functional institution. They would study various functions of Parliament, including lawmaking, securing financial accountability and ensuring executive accountability. Coupled with these are different dimensions of Parliament as a representative body, which integrates the whole country into one and also acts as a grievance-redressal mechanism.
Achary said the five interns, three of them women, had been picked up by a panel of eminent people and senior officials after inviting applications through newspaper advertisements.
