Chandigarh, Sept 14: An Amritsar resident, Manjeet Singh, has lodged a complaint with the city police that his bag containing five kg gold has been stolen. However, police are yet to register a case.

Police sources said Manjeet Singh reported that he was coming by a Punjab Roadways bus from Amritsar and was carrying a yellow-coloured bag containing 5 kg gold, which he had to supply to a local jeweller. He said he had kept the bag between his legs. The bag, he added, was intact till the bus reached S.A.S. Nagar after which it disappeared. He added that while he came by bus, his sister came by his car.

However, unwilling to buy his story, the police are yet to register a case. A police official, when contacted, said they were verifying the facts and were as yet not convinced of the story.

They said there were contradictions between the stories of the complainant and others. According to the car driver, both the brother and sister came by car up to Nawanshahr, where Manjeet got down and took a bus. He said he had no idea if he was carrying a yellow-coloured bag with him.

The police added that inquiries from the bus conductor revealed that he boarded the bus from Nawanshahr. Police suspect that Manjeet Singh probably wanted to claim insurance for the gold, which is roughly valued at Rs 20 lakh.
