MAY 8: Following its recent passenger car alliance with DaimlerChrysler AG in which the German-US auto giant agreed to take a 34 per cent stake in Mitsubishi Motors, the Japanese automaker said last month it would be embarking on plans to make a global compact car.

"It is true that we have begun studies for Hyundai to participate in the Mitsubishi-DaimlerChrysler global strategic compact car project, but we have not reached an agreement," said a Mitsubishi spokeswoman.

Mitsubishi and Hyundai, however, do have close ties and analysts said that such a deal would make sense as it would enable Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler to produce more vehicles, making for greater cost-competitiveness.
