There were six attacks at a string of small Shiite shrines east of Baqouba, 55 km northeast of Baghdad on Saturday.

The shrine attacks could have significant repercussions particularly in the Baqouba area, a mixed Sunni Arab-Shiite region where sectarian tensions have been running high.

Elsewhere in Iraq, 26 people died in bomb attacks, including two British soldiers on Saturday night. The attack involved two suicide car bombs that exploded near a checkpoint on a road leading to Baghdad8217;s international airport killing 14 Iraqis. The other 12 Iraqis were killed by four roadside bombs, three targeting Iraqi police patrols and one that exploded in an open market.
