Italy8217;s football jargon has a special term: 8216;8216;fantasista8217;8217;, to sum up the qualities of players like Francesco Totti.
It takes lots of inventiveness and class to be classified a fantasista 8212; a player who can stun the opponents with a defence-splitting pass, an exquisite lob, or a sublime piece of skill.
Totti, 27, has been displaying such qualities since his debut in the Italian Serie A with AS Roma, at the tender age of 16, and is today the most courted Italian player by foreign teams and a key element of Italy8217;s squad.
This season, Totti has already set a new record for the number of Serie A goals he has scored in a season 8212; 20 so far with three games remaining. 8216;8216;I am living a magic moment,8217;8217; he said. 8216;8216;Whatever I try, it works. I think I have reached my full maturity, both on and off the pitch.8217;8217;
Italian fans hope that his amazing form continues this summer in Portugal at Euro 2004, where the Azzurri will be looking for a first European title since 1968.
Italy in shape: Coach
Milan: The Azzurri are notoriously nervy before major tournaments, but looked in good physical shape on Sunday, beating African champions Tunisia 4-0 in a friendly. There were no injuries in the Italian camp and the starting line-up, likely to be Giovanni Trapattoni8217;s first choice, looked surprisingly fresh. The one major doubt remains the form of Alessandro Del Piero.
Germans delay naming team
BERLIN: Rudi Voeller will probably wait until the last minute and name his final Euro 2004 squad on Wednesday, the Germany coach said on Monday despite promising to announce it earlier. After losing both Paul Freier and Christian Rahn to injury, Voeller is taking no chances. Teenagers Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski are still favourites to complete party.
Scotland win, Denmark held
BERLIN: Denmark were held to a 2-2 draw by Estonia in an international friendly on Sunday, while Scotland beat Trinidad and Tobago 4-1, Wales edged Canada 1-0, Japan topped Iceland 3-2 and Jordan held Algeria to a 1-1 draw. The non-European teams are prepating for 2006 World Cup qualifiers. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Holland, England, Switzerland and Germany will play.
