LUDHIANA, May 6: In a massive drive launched last evening to clear encroachments, the Municipal Corporation staff has demolished over 1,000 jhuggis, temporary structures and some pucca houses near the New Sabzi Mandi on G. T. Road here to clear the way for four-laning of the Budha Nullah bridge.

The civic staff, yesterday, removed encroachments by several shopkeepers on the Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran road. The police have registered criminal cases against persons who tried to stage a dharna and disrupt vehicular traffic on the Jagraon bridge. According to police sources, Ashok Kumar, Ravinder Singh, Mohan Lal, Sat Pal, Kashmiri Lal and many other persons were booked for disturbing peace and blocking traffic.

The demolition drive on the G. T. Road continued this morning when the civic staff, led by Additional Commissioner Daljit Singh, descended on the site and issued a warning to the jhuggi dwellers to remove their belongings and shift to other places.

Three cranes and a few bulldozers were employed to remove the encroachments. Some single-storey and double-storey pucca houses constructed on government land were also demolished.

Though there was no resistance to the drive by the jhuggi dwellers, a police team, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Gurjit Singh, was also present.

According to MC officials, the anti-encroachment operation will continue till the national highway between the Old Sabzi Mandi and Jalandhar bye-pass is cleared.
