
AMRITSAR, Oct 15: Taking a strong exception of incidents of indecent ragging of freshers of B.Tech course in boys hostel of Guru Nanak Dev University GNDU here, the authorities today rusticated 10 students of final year.
The students were found indulging in harsh methods of ragging during a surprise raid conducted by Dean Students Welfare Om Awasthi and Warden Gurmit Singh on the night of October 10. The students were lined up and identified in an hour-long exercise ending after midnight.
Registrar R.S. Bawa said that an inquiry into the ragging incident had been ordered and would be conducted by Awasthi. He said further disciplinary action would be taken against the guilty students after the inquiry was over.
He said a raid was conducted in the boys and girls hostel following reports of late night ragging. He said though no specific incident had been reported from girls8217; hostel, the freshers in boys hostel had crossed limits of decency.
Bawa said that Dean Student Welfare and wardens of respective hostels had been asked to visit freshers every night to ensure their security. He said the rooms of 10 expelled students had been locked and their entry into the hostel banned.
Those faced expulsion included Parshant Gupta, Chakshu Goel, Hardip Singh Tur, Jap Preet Singh, Amanpreet Singh, Sukhjinder Singh, Rajbir Singh, Kanwarjit Singh Gill, Jaskirat Singh and Harjot Sidhu.
Gurmit Singh, warden of the boys8217; hostel, said that rustication was ordered on the basis of preliminary inquiry and statements of four students of first year of B.Tech.
