How can individuals adapt the 8+8+8 rule in professions with irregular working hours or demanding schedules?
Baruah mentions, “In the Indian context, where long commutes, extended work hours, and family responsibilities often take up significant time, adapting this rule requires a more realistic and flexible approach. Instead of rigidly sticking to the three eight-hour blocks, focus on achieving balance over a week or more.”
Sleep is a critical part of this balance, she adds. “If getting eight hours straight isn’t possible, consider shorter periods or naps when time allows. Engaging in small but meaningful activities — like having tea with family, reading for 15 minutes, or practicing mindfulness during short breaks — can add up.”

Another important aspect is setting boundaries. In demanding jobs, Baruah says, especially those with irregular schedules, communicating clearly about your availability is key.
