Armed with a unique blend of post-Industrial and instrumental rock powered by ambient keyboard patches and distorted guitars, Polish band Tides From Nebula boasts a sound that few others have dared to explore. Flushed with ideas surrounding the consciousness, space and the cosmic climate, their atmospheric, grimy sound speaks for itself. Since their inception in 2008, the band has performed at shows and festivals around the world, including Off Festival (Poland), Damnation Festival (England) and Dunk! Festival (Belgium), alongside heavyweight alternative rock and metal acts such as Tindersticks, The Flaming Lips, Atlas Sound and Shining. After three albums, the band is ready for their first India tour. Their first stop was the Shiva Squad Festival in Manali on September 27, and they will now perform in Delhi, Bangalore and Pune. Excerpts from an email interview with guitarist
Maciej Karbowski.

Your ambient blend of instrumental rock and post-rock is a sound rarely heard these days. How do you approach your compositions?

Actually, we can’t really tell what post-rock is; it just sort of happened. We love guitars, atmospheric sounds, space and delays.

Usually, it all starts with a riff or a guitar arpeggio, then we develop something around it that conveys our ideas. There is no real recipe for a song.

Is that why you have called yourselves Tides From Nebula?

We think the name fits our style and our music really well. We work a lot of ideas into our music about consciousness, space and time, and even quantum physics. These ideas make you understand the world very differently. You begin to believe that what you as a human can see, hear, feel, is just an illusion that your brain is creating. This sends shivers down our spines.

Who or what inspires you?

We read a lot of Eckhart Tolle and Ken Wilber and love 70’s science-fiction, especially themed on space odysseys. We also listen to rock bands such as Faith No More, Alice in Chains and Tool, and even classical musicians like Chopin. Off late, however, we’ve been into electronica.

This is your first trip to India. What are you expecting?

We really can’t believe it’s happening. I think it’ll hit us harder after we leave for Delhi. We honestly have no idea what to expect, but we believe it’s going to be a blast. Let’s see how you react to the live music experience we bring.

Tides From Nebula will perform on October 5, at the Bike Festival of India, at Buddh International Circuit in Noida. Tickets available for Rs 1,500 on http://www.bookmyshow.com
