Do yoga asanas help stimulate hair growth?
It's crucial to approach yoga as one component of a holistic lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, proper hydration, and overall health maintenance, said Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics

Yoga is a holistic practice that encompasses physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and meditation. While it is widely acknowledged for its positive impact on overall health and well-being, if yoga teacher Somya Thakur is to go by, certain postures can help improve hair growth with regular practice.
In an Instagram reel, Thakur demonstrated yoga postures like Ustrasana, Padhastasana, and Halasana and listed their benefits for hair growth.
Ustrasana
Thakur said that Ustrasana directs the blood flow toward the scalp, thereby stimulating hair growth. “Moreover, it also balances the abnormalities of the thyroid gland, which can also lead to hair loss. Because of increased blood circulation to the scalp, ustrasana can prevent premature greying of hair.”
Padhastasana
In this asana, your head receives blood circulation when it goes below the heart. This posture provides oxygen to your hair cells and energises them. “It also relaxes your mind and relieves stress, one of the major causes of hair fall. The bend improves your digestive system by giving it a good massage, which also aids in the healthy growth of hair follicles,” said Thakur.

Halasana
Halasana diverts the blood flow toward the upper parts of your body, including the roots and tips of your hair. This benefits the health of your hair.
Contraindications of these asanas are:
* Those suffering from back problems or slipped discs.
* Weak or injured cervical muscles.
* Weak legs, weak hamstring muscles, or calf muscles.
* Pregnant women or women during their menstruation time should avoid these asanas
However, Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist, and dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics told indianexpress.com that scientific evidence specifically connecting certain yoga asanas to hair growth is limited. “Hair growth is a complex process influenced by genetics, hormonal balance, nutritional factors, and overall health. Stress, however, is recognised as a potential contributor to hair loss. Yoga, with its emphasis on relaxation and stress reduction, may indirectly support hair health. Chronic stress can disrupt the normal hair growth cycle, leading to issues like hair shedding or thinning.”

Dr Kapoor added that certain yoga postures are believed to improve blood circulation, potentially enhancing nutrient delivery to hair follicles. “Improved blood flow may positively influence the health of the scalp and hair. Asanas like forward bends, inversions, and twists are thought to stimulate circulation and reduce stress.”
Additionally, yoga encourages mindfulness and relaxation, which can positively impact hormonal balance. Dr Kapoor noted that hormonal fluctuations are linked to hair health, and maintaining hormonal equilibrium may contribute to healthier hair. “While anecdotal evidence suggests that individuals practicing yoga regularly experience improvements in hair quality, robust scientific studies validating these claims are lacking. It’s crucial to approach yoga as one component of a holistic lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, proper hydration, and overall health maintenance,” she conclued.
