Have your weight-lifting sessions left you with severe itching on your palms and arms? In your quest to stay fit and build muscle, don’t let your skin suffer. It might be time to rethink your routine before it leads to a visit to the dermatologist.
indianexpress.com spoke to Dr Sri Sahithi Konidena, founder and chief dermatologist of Prime Derm Skin and Hair Clinic, Hyderabad, to understand how to prevent this situation.
“Yes, exposure to various irritants and allergens during physical activity can lead to contact dermatitis,” said Dr Konidena. The combination of mechanical stress, increased sweating, and elevated temperatures can cause small breaks, fissures, and abrasions in the skin.
She also noted that some weightlifters avoid using gloves, leading to hardened skin on their palms, which can become painful over time.
“There have been cases of fungal infections due to sharing gym equipment, which can spread diseases,” she added.
Dr Konidena recommends carrying a small towel to blot sweat during workouts. “After physical activity, change out of sweaty clothes immediately, as staying in wet clothes can irritate the skin,” she said. She also recommends showering right after exercise and applying a good moisturiser, along with powders, to soothe the skin.
“Working out in a well-maintained gym should be a priority, and maintaining personal hygiene—like washing hands immediately before touching your face or arms—is crucial,” said the dermatologist.
Choosing high-quality gym wear that absorbs excess moisture is another key tip. “Make sure to wash your gym clothes and sun-dry them thoroughly,” Dr Konidena said.
Dr Konidena explained that a patient’s history is taken into account to rule out the cause and advise them precautions. Generally, the patient is advised anti-inflammatory treatments with corticosteroids, moisturisers, and antihistamines to prevent allergies or prescribed suitable soaps and powders to reduce the complications of sweating or fungal infection.
