Pre-workouts have been a common denominator in the world of fitness. While some prefer fruits, some opt for supplements and protein powders. If you are on the hunt to tweak and spice up your pre-workout routine, we have a great recommendation for you. Digital creator Harrison, in an Instagram reel, revealed his pre-workout drink - a concoction of black coffee, pink himalayan salt, and honey. To understand if this combination is indeed effective, indianexpress.com spoke to Anushree Sharma, registered dietitian, Health1 hospitals, Ahmedabad. She walked us through the health benefits of this drink and shared possible risks. Sharma said many people drink black coffee as pre-workout because it increases the basal metabolic rate (BMR). "Adding salt in it will not just reduce the bitterness of coffee, but also help prevent cramps by maintaining the electrolyte balance in the body. Salt is known for holding water in the body and thus, it will help in maintaining the hydration levels," said Sharma. She explained that by adding honey to this mix, the body gets an extra source of energy since it contains fructose and some amount of glucose and sucrose. How often should you have this drink? Sharma said that as a pre-workout concoction, this drink can be consumed around 30 to 60 minutes before starting one's workout. "Taking it once in a day is enough." Who should be careful of this concoction? "Due to the caffeine content, some people might face discomfort in the abdominal region. In certain people, caffeine causes acidity, especially when consumed on an empty stomach," said Sharma. Sharma also warned that the concoction may cause an increase in blood sugar levels since it contains honey, and hence, naturally, cannot be advised to diabetic patients.
