As climate change continues to pose a grave threat to our planet, the concept of carbon neutrality has gained significant attention in recent years. However, an even more ambitious and commendable goal has emerged on the horizon termed carbon negative. Recently, Sikkim‘s relentless pursuit of becoming a carbon negative state has grabbed media attention as not only a commendable feat for the environment but also promising far-reaching benefits for the overall well-being of its people. It has the potential of serving as an inspiring model for other states in India.

As part of the state’s ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’ program which entails planting 100 saplings every time a new baby is born, the goal is to become carbon negative, declared Karma Loday Bhutia, a Sikkim forest minister in an interaction with India Today NE. It is part of the initiative to make Sikkim a green state with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s target of Net Zero by 2070.

Calling it a “groundbreaking and innovative approach towards achieving carbon negativity”, Bandana Jain, a contemporary artist and a sustainability design expert, explained the significance of the concept and how it helps.

“Sikkim’s journey towards carbon negativity sets a high standard for environmental consciousness and holds the promise of significant health benefits, economic growth, and enhanced tourism. As a model for sustainable practices, Sikkim’s achievements inspire other states, empowering them to take similar steps and collectively contribute to a greener and more resilient India. By embracing innovative strategies like afforestation, carbon capture, and sustainable initiatives, other states can follow suit, fostering a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future for all,” Jain said.

What is carbon negativity?

“Carbon negative is a term that goes beyond merely reducing carbone missions; it signifies an active commitment to remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than is produced. This bold endeavour aims to reverse the adverse effects of greenhouse gas accumulation and significantly contribute to combating climate change,” said Jain in an interaction with indianexpress.com.

To achieve carbon negativity, we need intelligent and eco-friendly methods. According to Jain, two effective ways are planting lots of trees – Afforestation and reforestation, and capturing and storing carbon emissions from industries.

“Another excellent method is using bioenergy sources like biomass, which absorbs Co2 or carbon dioxide as it grows, and then stores its emissions (BECCS). Also, spreading certain minerals in powder form can speed up carbon capture from the air through enhanced weathering,” Jain mentioned.

Additionally, better soil practices in agriculture can help absorb and store carbon in the ground, which is called Soil Carbon Sequestration. “Carbon negativity is essential, but we must also reduce emissions at their source. We can make a greener world by using innovative and sustainable approaches. Let’s act now to combat climate change and create a healthier future for everyone,” Jain said.

How do these measures help?

Health benefits

Sikkim sets a strong foundation for improved public health by embracing a carbon-negative stance. “Reducing carbon emissions and air pollutants leads to cleaner air, resulting in decreased respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. This healthier environment positively impacts the well-being of residents, contributing to an increase in life expectancy and overall quality of life,” mentioned Jain.

Tourism potential

Sikkim’s carbon-negative status enhances its appeal as a nature-loving tourist destination and is a game-changer that fosters a greener and more sustainable society that creates a unique selling point for eco-tourism, added Jain. “This sustainable approach can attract environmentally conscious tourists, boosting the state’s economy and creating employment opportunities in the tourism sector. Initiatives like organic farming, plastic bag bans, and environmentally responsible practices attract eco-tourists who value responsible travel, further contributing to Sikkim’s tourism revenue,” the expert said.
