Count on social media to introduce a fresh trend almost every day or week, whether it’s in the realms of beauty, fashion, health, or just plain old fun. The latest trend gaining momentum on TikTok is ‘shadow work’ which is now termed as an affordable and convenient way to aid one’s mental well-being.

It is fuelled by a burst in sales of ‘The Shadow Work Journal’, a self-published book by Keila Shaheen featuring prompts designed to help you identify aspects of yourself. Currently, a bestselling book on Amazon owing to its massive online popularity, it is inspired by the writings of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung.

It’s gaining such momentum on the video-sharing app that the TikTok hashtag #shadowworkjournal has amassed over 700 million views and has videos of people trying to complete exercises and share their answers.

But, what is shadow work, and is it really helpful in aiding your mental health? We turned to experts to know more.

According to Dr Rahul Kakkar, consultant psychiatrist and psychotherapist, Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Gurugram, the ‘shadow self’ is a concept from psychology, particularly in the Jungian tradition.

“It refers to the unconscious, repressed aspects of an individual’s personality that they may not be fully aware of. These aspects can include negative emotions, desires, fears, and traits that are often hidden or suppressed,” he said.

As such, ‘shadow work’ is a process of self-exploration and self-acceptance aimed at confronting and integrating one’s shadow self. “It involves acknowledging and embracing the hidden, often uncomfortable, aspects of oneself to achieve personal growth and psychological healing,” Dr Kakkar said.

Agreeing, Dr HP Bharathi, deputy chief medical officer, Jindal Naturecure Institute said that the goal of shadow work is personal growth, healing, and reduced projection onto others.

“Various techniques, such as journaling, therapy, and naturopathic interventions, are used for shadow work, which is considered vital for self-awareness and emotional well-being. This holistic approach ensures that individuals can address their shadow selves from multiple angles, promoting overall health and balance,” she said.

How does shadow work help one’s mental health?

Experts note that shadow work can be beneficial for mental health in several ways. Dr Kakkar listed some possible benefits.

Increased self-awareness: It helps individuals become more aware of their hidden emotions and patterns, which can lead to better understanding and management of their mental health.

Emotional healing: By confronting and processing repressed emotions and traumas, shadow work can promote emotional healing and reduce inner conflicts.

Improved relationships: Understanding and accepting one’s shadow self can lead to healthier relationships as individuals become less reactive and more empathetic toward others.

Personal growth: Integrating the shadow self can lead to personal growth, increased self-acceptance, and a sense of wholeness, which can positively impact mental well-being.

However, the expert added that shadow work can be challenging and may require the guidance of a therapist or counsellor for some individuals.
