Fabulous Lives vs. Bollywood Wives star Riddhima Kapoor Sahni recently shared her deep bond with her niece, Raha, and her brother, Ranbir Kapoor.
She playfully expressed how her time with Raha brings out her fun, unfiltered side, saying, “Randomly, I start speaking with an accent. I can’t be fake, I’d rather be like, ‘what’s up, hato! (get out of the way!)’ and then I grab Raha, and I’m just squishing her.” She added that when she and her family are in Mumbai, Ranbir or her sister-in-law Alia Bhatt often bring Raha over, making it an opportunity for the family to bond and have a joyous time together.

This connection with younger family members, especially nieces and nephews, is not just about fun and play. It can also provide significant mental health benefits, offering a sense of purpose, reducing stress, and boosting happiness.
Sonal Khangarot, licensed rehabilitation counsellor and psychotherapist, The Answer Room, tells indianexpress.com, “Interacting with younger family members often involves laughter, playful conversations, storytelling, and lighthearted activities that help alleviate stress. It allows adults to break the everyday cycle of adulthood and press the ‘pause and reset’ button. Additionally, children’s unconditional love and warmth create emotional comfort, increase the sense of belonging, and reduce feelings of isolation.”
Psychologists have found that laughter and play reduce cortisol levels, Khangarot says, which is the hormone associated with stress. “Interacting with younger family members also teaches patience, perspective, and adaptability, which enhance emotional intelligence. Furthermore, it boosts mental agility, as engaging with children involves creative thinking, critical thinking, and imagination,” she adds.
Khangarot mentions, “Yes, close relationships with nieces and nephews can create a sense of purpose. Spending time with them provides an opportunity to impart wisdom and lessons that contribute to their growth and development.”
This role can be significant for non-parenting adults or extended family members, enhancing their sense of self and belonging. When these factors are combined, they increase life satisfaction and give greater purpose to one’s life.
Studies suggest that spending time with younger relatives can boost emotional intelligence and improve mood. Khangarot adds, “A notable study by the American Psychological Association found that intergenerational bonds can enhance family dynamics and mental well-being by creating a network of emotional support and reducing stress. A classic example of this can be seen in the television series This Is Us, which illustrates the positive impact of multi-generational connections.”
