Maintaining a healthy heart goes beyond the realms of cardiovascular exercises and cholesterol checks. Surprisingly, an often-overlooked aspect of heart health lies in the gut – more specifically, the battle against constipation. A Harvard study published in December 2021, has shed light on the intricate connection between constipation and heart-related issues, bringing forth a new perspective on digestive well-being and its impact on cardiovascular health.
The Hidden Link: Constipation and Heart Problems
While constipation might seem like a trivial concern, its repercussions extend far beyond the discomfort of irregular bowel movements. A growing body of evidence suggests that chronic constipation may contribute to an increased risk of heart problems. The intricate link lies in the intricate network between the gut and the cardiovascular system.
Dr Nirupama Rao, nutritionist, Rejua Energy Centre, Mumbai, explained that constipation and heart problems may be linked through chronic inflammation.
“Constipation can lead to a build-up of toxins, triggering inflammation that may affect the cardiovascular system. Additionally, shared risk factors like a sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical activity, and poor diet contribute to both conditions,” she said.
Research has shown that constipation has a close association or link with cardiovascular events. Constipation increases with age and often coexists with cardiovascular risk factors, Dr Rao noted.
In addition, the strain on stool causes an increase in blood pressure, which can trigger cardiovascular events such as congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, acute coronary disease, and aortic dissection. Additionally, sometimes gas in the colon can spread to the chest and present as heart pain.
• Increase fibre intake through whole grains, fruits, and vegetables – A balanced diet with an adequate amount of fibre, combined with sufficient fluid intake, is the cornerstone of managing and preventing constipation.
• Stay hydrated to soften stools and aid digestion – Drink enough water as per the requirements of your body and food. Maintaining hydration levels effectively alleviates symptoms and supports long-term gastrointestinal health.
• Include probiotics in your diet for a healthy gut flora – Probiotics play an important role in maintaining a healthy gut. To keep your gut healthy, a balanced gut microbiome is essential.
• Engage in regular physical activity to promote bowel movements and cardiovascular health – Exercise improves our gut health, which improves our immune system and keeps our heart healthy too.
