Dermatologist shares everything you need to know about clarifying shampoos

“A clarifying shampoo is used once in a while use for deep cleansing designed to thoroughly remove sebum from the hair shaft, but is typically used to remove retained styling products, such as hair spray, gel, and mousse,” said Dr Sri Sahithi Konidena, Founder and Chief Dermatologist of Prime Derm Skin and Hair Clinic, Hyderabad.

“The ideal frequency of using them in one’s regular haircare routine depends on how one treats their hair. It can be used once weekly to once in 3 weeks. Dry scalp individual can stick to once a month or once in 6 weeks,” she added.

According to her, the use of clarifying shampoo frequently depends on activities like frequent hair styling products, and swimming in chlorine water as it helps in washing out the build-up residue.

“These hair cleansers contain high levels of surfactants which are strong and it cannot replace a regular cleanser. It’s a once-in-a-while kind of requirement,” she said.

What’s the best way to use clarifying shampoos?

Dr Konidena shared that clarifying shampoos should not be used regularly because it can make scalp and hair dry and sensitive scalp individuals must not use it frequently. “Take a small amount on damp hair and rinse. Post shampooing, it’s good to apply a conditioner to prevent dryness,” she suggested.

However, she warned that all those suffering from scalp conditions like psoriasis to use it with caution.

When asked whether clarifying shampoos can be used by those with oily and dry scalps, Dr Konidena shared that “these shampoos strip off the oils on the scalp, hence it is not best suited for dry hair as it causes frizzy, fly away kind of hair, itchy scalp.”

According to her, people with dry hair must stick to once in 6 weeks or opt for a monthly wash. As for those with an oily scalp, they can go for it once in 2 weeks, she added.
