Bhai Dooj 2023 Date in India Calendar: Bhaiya Dooj, also known by various names such as Bhai Tika, Bhaubeej, Bhai Phonta, or Bhratri Dwitiya, is a sacred festival that celebrates the unique bond between siblings. This observance falls on the second day of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik, typically falling between October and November in the Gregorian calendar.

Sisters on this day offer prayers for the well-being, longevity, and prosperity of their dear brothers. They mark this occasion by applying a tilak or vermilion mark on their brothers’ foreheads, and performing an aarti with a colourful thali containing sweets, roli, and a coconut. Siblings indulge in mouthwatering delicacies and exchange gifts as tokens of affection.

One of the most popular legends behind Bhai Dooj involves Yama, the Lord of Death, and his sister Yamuna. According to the story, Yama visited his sister Yamuna on the day of Dwitiya in the Kartik month (between October and November). Overjoyed by her brother’s visit, Yamuna applied a tilak on Yama’s forehead and performed an aarti to bless him. Touched by her love and devotion, Yama gave her a boon that whoever receives a tilak and aarti from their sister on this day would not suffer the torment of hellfire. This legend symbolises the strong bond between siblings and the significance of Bhai Dooj in protecting brothers from adversity.
