According to the story, Yama visited his sister Yamuna on the day of Dwitiya in the Kartik month (between October and November). Overjoyed by her brother’s visit, Yamuna applied a tilak on Yama’s forehead and performed an aarti to bless him. Touched by her love and devotion, Yama gave her a boon that whoever receives a tilak and aarti from their sister on this day would not suffer the torment of hellfire.
