Monsoon health: Is jamun a superfood you need this season?
Jamun aids in the conversion of carbohydrates to energy and regulates blood sugar levels, said nutritionist Suman

The monsoon season is here in full swing. As the weather changes, so does your food choices and preferences need some tweaking. As such, seasonal vegetables and fruits are recommended to better your immunity and help you fight off seasonal illnesses. One such lesser-known but effective fruit that does just that is jamun or black plum.
Nutritionist Suman took to Instagram to share that jamun is a “superfood in the monsoon“.

“Jamun aids in the conversion of carbohydrates to energy and regulates blood sugar levels. It also has low glycaemic index and alleviates diabetics’ symptoms such as excessive urination,” said Suman.
Does it really work as a superfood?
Dietician Harpreet, founder of Preet Fitness Class pointed out that while jamun is a nutritious fruit that offers several health benefits, the term “superfood” is not a scientifically defined term. “The concept of superfoods generally refers to foods that are exceptionally rich in nutrients and have potential health benefits. However, it’s important to remember that there is no single food that can provide all the necessary nutrients and health benefits on its own. A diverse and balanced diet is a key to achieve optimal nutrition,” said Harpeet.
Why jamun is beneficial during monsoon?
“During the monsoon season, the weather can be humid and hot in many regions. Jamun has a natural cooling effect on the body and can help combat heat-related discomfort. It is often consumed as a refreshing fruit or as a part of cooling beverages or desserts,” said Harpeet.

The expert also listed several other benefits:
High in nutrients: Jamun is rich in essential nutrients such as vitamins A and C, iron, potassium, calcium, and fiber. These nutrients are important for maintaining overall health and boosting immunity.
Antioxidant properties: Jamun is known for its potent antioxidant properties. It contains compounds like anthocyanins, ellagic acid, and tannins, which help fight against free radicals and protect the body from oxidative stress. Antioxidants are crucial for reducing the risk of chronic diseases and supporting a healthy immune system.
Blood sugar management: Jamun has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for its blood sugar-lowering effects. It contains compounds that can help regulate blood glucose levels and improve insulin sensitivity. This makes it a suitable fruit for individuals with diabetes or those looking to manage their blood sugar levels.
Digestive health: Jamun is known to have astringent properties, which can help improve digestion and relieve symptoms like diarrhea and dysentery. The fruit’s high fibre content also aids in maintaining a healthy digestive system and preventing constipation.
