(Pic source: Pexels)Commonly found in the Southern states of India, jungle jalebi — also known as seema chintakaya in Telugu, kodukka puli in Tamil, and seema hunase in Kannada — is a tropical fruit that grows on a thorny shrub or small tree called Pithecellobium dulce. Traditionally native to Central America and Mexico, its other English names include Manila tamarind, Madras thorn, monkey pod, and camachile.
In India, jungle jalebi is available mainly during the summer season, from April to June, and is something experts advice should be consumed as part of the diet. The fruit, considered to be good for the eyes and manage weight, is also known to boost digestion, regulate blood sugar levels, and enhance immunity.
Speaking with indianexpress.com, Sameena Ansari – Senior Dietitian and Nutritionist, CARE Hospitals, Hi-Tec City, Hyderabad said, “Jungle jalebi is known for its numerous health benefits. It is a good source of dietary fiber and contains several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and iron”.

Below are some health benefits of jungle jalebi, as shared by Ansari.
1. Boosts digestion: Jungle jalebi contains dietary fiber, which promotes good digestion and prevents constipation.
2. Regulates blood sugar: It has a low glycemic index, which means it does not cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, making it a good option for people with diabetes.
3. Enhances immunity: Jungle jalebi is rich in vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and protects against infections.
4. Good for eyesight: The fruit contains vitamin A, which is essential for maintaining good eyesight.
5. May help in weight management: Jungle jalebi is low in calories and high in fiber, which makes it a good snack option for people looking to manage their weight.
While jungle jalebi has several health benefits, there are some things to keep in mind. “The fruit contains oxalic acid, which may interfere with the absorption of calcium and iron,” said Ansari, adding that people with kidney problems should also avoid eating too much jungle jalebi as it may worsen their condition.
“Also, the thorny nature of the fruit requires careful handling during preparation,” she continued.
You can eat the fruit raw or use it in various recipes such as salads, chutneys, and jams. The fruit can also be used to make refreshing summer drinks.
