Grub It

It was about two years ago that Chaitanya Mathur of BanginBeats, an online dance music portal, came up with the idea of a food festival in a park. After attending a ton of similar festivals across the world, he felt that the vacuum in the Capital needed to be filled.

It was then that he conceptualised The Grub Fest. In its first edition, The Grub Fest, which opened on Friday, is the latest to join the plethora of food-centred festivals in the Capital. “I attended the Palate Fest last year in Nehru Park and it was a great experience for me as a foodie. It also suggested that people will come out in numbers at food fests. There is space for more than one giant food festival in Delhi, and that itself tells you so much about how the city has changed,” says the 26-year-old, who has organised it along with entrepreneurs Aman Kumar, Arjun Jain and Mani Singh Cheema. Spread over Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the festival boasts a huge line-up of food trucks and food pops from across the city. So while one can gorge over some Daulat ki chaat from old Delhi, there are also pop-ups by new and popular restaurants such Smokey’s, NYC Pie and Town Hall.

“The point is to present all kinds of cuisines, under all budgets, including some old and legendary restaurants such as United Coffee House,” says Mathur. A Ta Maison and PCO are handling the bar at the venue. Apart from food pop-ups, there are culinary workshops, music performances, a kids area and also a stand-up comedy act by Vir Das. On till Sunday, Mathur hopes to take this festival to other cities such as Mumbai by the end of the year.
