Here's what you should know (Photo: Pixabay)Ginger has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. But what happens if someone chews a piece of ginger daily for 60 days? This is the question we asked Dr Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, who said it gradually reduces throat irritation, relaxes the airways, and improves circulation. “Over 6 to 8 weeks, many people notice fewer coughs, better digestion, and less bloating. For those prone to seasonal respiratory symptoms, ginger can soothe the inner lining of the airways and support overall lung comfort,” said Sheikh.
Yes, but with realistic expectations, contended Sheikh. “Ginger doesn’t ‘open the lungs’ like medicine does. Instead, it works gently. It can reduce throat congestion, ease mild wheezing from cold weather, and help people who often feel irritation from pollutants. Its warming effect also helps loosen mucus, making it easier to expel during an infection. For chronic lung diseases like asthma or COPD, ginger can help but should never replace prescribed treatment,” Sheikh remarked.
Daily ginger is generally safe, but overuse can irritate the mouth, trigger acidity in sensitive people, or slightly thin the blood, Sheikh noted. “Those taking blood thinners or who have acid reflux or gastritis should consult a doctor before making it a habit. Moderation is important; a small piece is more than enough,” said Sheikh.

Quantity matters. A thumb-sized piece, or 2 to 3 small slices, is enough.
Your stomach’s response matters. “If you feel heartburn, reduce the amount or switch to warm ginger water instead of chewing it raw,” said Sheikh.
Sheikh stressed that ginger is a supportive food, not a cure. “It can soothe the throat, reduce inflammation, and improve immunity over time. However, if someone often feels breathless, has a persistent cough, or experiences chest tightness, they should seek proper evaluation. While lifestyle support is helpful, timely diagnosis is far more important for lung health,” said Sheikh.
