After a moment’s silence for the passing of Uzzuri Deck and Dining in Greater Kailash II, we move on to its new avatar, Uzzuri Deli, in Janpath, which comes in a simpler format than its African cuisine predecessor. The two-level space is split into the deli on the ground floor and the cocktail bar above. Each area is distinct in terms of soundtracks, decor aad designs. The deli is lulled by the soft sounds of old French and Italian love songs and sepia snapshots of Delhi in repose, while the bar is hip and pulsating, with ambient electronica and accoutred in travel tools and gear.

The menu for both spaces, however, is the same. They stick largely to deli staples such as sandwiches, salads and rotisserie items but bring in unusual flavours such as Creole and Mint Lamb Burger and Chilli Lime Tilapia. The cocktail menu is just as engaging and, literally, a playlist of liqueurs, liquors, fruits and herbs.

We begin with the Jerk Chicken Tortillas and Dragon Chili Tenderloin Strips. The strips show up first, laid back on a bed of fries and accompanied by a chilled salad. While casual in appearance, they take their business seriously and are red in shade and redolent in spices. The tortillas are far gentler in comparison, though as flavoursome in their own way — containing chopped cucumber, cumin and coriander-marinated chicken chunks and inundated in deliquesced cheese. Arriba!

For our mains, we have an Old School Classic Pizza and, as a tribute to the former Uzzuri, the African Spiced Lamb. More petite than a runway model but stuffed with pepperoni, chorizo and Parmesan, and with a heavy drizzle of basil pesto on an undergrowth of roquette leaves, the pizza reminds you how cool was school (forgive us our puns). The lamb leg comes gambolling up, braised in African spices, recumbent on a genteel pea mash with a confit of garlic and caper jus. While practically falling off the bone, so well braised it is, the flavour is perhaps more muted than our Dilli palates are used to.

Our dessert is selected from the refrigerated counter out in the front. The carrot cake is sinful with cinnamon and is our favourite. The black velvet cake, layered in salted caramel and coated in chocolate, is just the right antidote for the muggy weather.
