Strawberries, known for their sweet taste and vibrant colour, are packed with nutrients and antioxidants. But are they a direct contributory factor for knee pain relief? We came across an Instagram reel from natural product chemist Dan Gubler suggesting that strawberries can help with “bad knee pain”.

“A quarter cup of strawberries every single day. I’ll throw in a 2017 clinical study that suggested that inflammation markers in the knees are significantly reduced by eating strawberries regularly,” said Gubler.

We decided to reach out to experts on whether strawberries can truly help. Dr Archana Batra, nutritionist, physiotherapist, and certified diabetes educator, Gurgaon said that while they’re not a direct cure for knee pain, their nutritional composition may offer some support in managing joint health and potentially alleviating discomfort.

“One crucial component in strawberries is their high vitamin C content, which contributes to collagen formation. Collagen is a vital component of cartilage, the tissue that cushions and protects the joints. Therefore, consuming foods rich in vitamin C, like strawberries, may aid in supporting joint health and potentially reducing knee pain,” Dr Batra told indianexpress.com.

Moreover, strawberries contain anthocyanins, the compounds responsible for their red colour, which possess anti-inflammatory properties. “Inflammation in the joints is often associated with knee pain, and foods rich in anti-inflammatory compounds might help reduce this discomfort,” added Dr Batra.

One notable finding is that strawberries have been associated with the reduction of TNF-α, an inflammatory marker, and lipid peroxidation products in obese adults with knee osteoarthritis, mentioned Dr Mudit Khanna, orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central. “These reductions may lead to decreased pain and inflammation, making strawberries a potential dietary addition for those with knee osteoarthritis,” said Dr Khanna.

Additionally, the antioxidants present in strawberries can assist in combating oxidative stress, which may be linked to joint damage and pain.

However, Dr Batra apprised that while there might not be direct scientific evidence specifically linking strawberries to knee pain relief, their overall antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties could contribute to a joint-friendly diet.

It’s important to note that the potential benefits of strawberries for knee pain should be considered as part of a holistic approach to joint health. “A balanced diet, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and consulting a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment are fundamental components in managing knee pain or any joint-related issues,” Dr Batra noted.

Your takeaway

Strawberries are not a direct solution for knee pain, their nutritional composition, especially the presence of vitamin C, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds, suggests they could play a supportive role in promoting joint health.

“Incorporating these vibrant berries as part of a well-rounded, nutritious diet might contribute to overall joint health and potentially help in managing knee discomfort. However, it’s essential to remember that individual experiences and results may vary, and professional medical advice should always be sought for proper diagnosis and treatment of knee pain,” Dr Batra said.
