Sometimes, when I am shooting or travelling, or I am jetlagged, I add a few drops of lemon juice in my coffee and even black salt,” Passi said.
Taking a cue from the art collector’s admission to Pinkvilla, let’s explore if there are any benefits to such a drink.
Dt Gulnaaz Shaikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said that in moderation, this is generally safe for healthy adults. “Lemon adds a fresh citrus note, while black salt can improve flavour without adding processed sodium. However, too much lemon may damage tooth enamel over time due to acidity, and too much black salt could raise overall sodium intake. It’s about balance; just a few drops or a light pinch is enough,” said Shaikh.

Are there any benefits to this practice?
When travelling, routines often change, and our digestion can feel off. “Simple tweaks like this can make a drink more enjoyable and gentler on the stomach, helping you stay hydrated and energised. Pair your coffee with enough water and balanced meals, and avoid relying on caffeine alone for energy,” she said.
According to Shaikh, lemon contains vitamin C and antioxidants, which can support immunity and digestion. “Black salt, often used in Indian diets, may help with mild indigestion or bloating for some people. Some travellers find that adding lemon or black salt can make their coffee easier on the stomach, especially when their routine is disrupted,” said Shaikh.
What to note?
Always use fresh lemon juice instead of bottled varieties to avoid added preservatives. “If you’re sensitive to acidity or have gastritis, you may want to skip lemon in coffee. For black salt, a tiny pinch is enough; too much can increase sodium intake and affect blood pressure. Also, if you’re using a stainless-steel or ceramic mug, rinse it right after drinking to prevent staining or corrosion from lemon,” said Shaikh.
Small, mindful changes are better than drastic experiments. “Enjoy your coffee, try flavours moderately, and always listen to your body. Staying hydrated, keeping regular meal schedules, and choosing fresh, local ingredients wherever you can will help maintain your digestive health and energy levels,” said Shaikh.
