Air pollution is the most talked about issue right now. Apart from protecting oneself by wearing masks, and staying indoors, many also resort to herbal remedies to safeguard from pollution. One such is jaggery which is claimed to be beneficial to soothe throat irritation caused by air pollution.

Gut microbiome specialist Shonali Sabherwal took to Instagram to suggest that one can have a small piece of jaggery 2-3 times a day followed by a glass of water to ease throat irritation and coughing caused by air pollution. “It doesn’t detoxify the body but clears the particulate matter from the respiratory tract,” said Sabherwal.

How does it help?

If experts are to go by, organic jaggery helps clear the passageway to the throat. “It can miraculously save you from ingesting all those toxic chemicals from air pollution. It acts as a natural cleanser for the throat and lungs and increases your immunity to ward off infections,” said Shivani Bajwa, founder, YogaSutra Holistic Living.

According to Dt. Deepali Sharma, Clinical Nutritionist at the CK Birla Hospital (R), Delhi, jaggery helps to reduce inflammation in the airways. “Also, the antioxidants in jaggery may help to protect the lungs from damage caused by pollutants,” said Sharma.

Bajwa added that organic jaggery also has other health benefits for the gut as it helps with constipation, indigestion, and acidity thereby reducing overall mucus and congestion in the body.

How to use it?

If mixed with warm water, tulsi leaves, and ginger, it works great for the entire ENT or system. “It leaves you with a soothing sensation addressing itchiness and cough too. This may be consumed thrice a day,” said Bajwa, underlining that the quantity should be minimal.

Bajwa also mentioned that a piece of jaggery with a teaspoon of ghee and a pinch of turmeric helps too.

Moreover, since it’s rich in iron it’s excellent for tackling anaemia commonly seen in people who may get affected by pollution severely, Bajwa added.

However, experts also underlined that if you suffer from chronic conditions like diabetes, it is best to consult your healthcare provider before taking jaggery every day.
