Recovery from a C-section delivery is a gradual and vital process for any new mother. As such, a slow and steady process is key, starting with gentle movements and gradually increasing activity levels as the body heals. Lataa Saberwal followed a similar approach after the birth of her son.

Taking to Instagram, the actor recently shared her first exercise post C-section which was aimed to shed around 20 kilos of postpartum weight. Can you guess what it is? It’s simply walking!

“After Aarav was born, I had put on around 20 kgs. When I decided to shed these kilos, I started with a basic and simple walk three months after my C-section. I didn’t even opt for brisk walking as I couldn’t push myself,” she said in the video.

Lataa said she used to simply walk for 20 minutes. “Gradually, I converted it to brisk walking and then I started walking even more fast with my headphones on. So, please do not underestimate the power of a simple and basic walk,” she added.

Taking a cue from the actor, we decided to understand from an expert how a simple walk can be helpful for new mothers post their C-section delivery.

According to Dr Anusha Rao P, consultant obstetrics and gynaecology, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, “Post ceasarean section, while recovering, it’s essential to prioritise your health and fitness, but it’s equally important to do so safely. One excellent way to begin your post-C-section fitness journey is by walking.”

After a C-section delivery, walking is an ideal exercise for several reasons, as shared by Dr Rao:

*Walking provides cardiovascular benefits without being too strenuous, making it an excellent choice for a gradual postpartum fitness routine.
*A leisurely walk outdoors can do wonders for your mental well-being, reducing stress and boosting your energy levels during those early post-C-section days.
*Walking engages your core muscles and encourages circulation, aiding in the healing process of your abdominal muscles and incision site.
*You can start with short, slow walks and gradually increase both the duration and intensity as you heal and regain strength.

However, starting a walking routine after a C-section requires patience and caution. “Before beginning any exercise program, consult your obstetrician to ensure you’re physically ready for any activity. Typically after 4-6 weeks post-C-section, the doctor may approve to begin light exercise,” she said.

Dr Rao suggested keeping these tips in mind:

Start slowly: Begin with short, 10-15 minute walks on flat, even surfaces, such as around your home, under your apartment or in a nearby park.

Pay attention to your body: Listen to your body’s signals. If you experience pain, discomfort, or fatigue, stop and rest.

Gradually increase intensity: As your strength improves and your body heals, extend the duration and incorporate slight inclines to make your walks more challenging.
