Can this 10-second glute stretch help your back?
Find out how glute stretch can help heal lower back pain

Physical fitness is what makes all the difference to your bones and joints. As such, it is advisable to do a few stretches that can help the body open up and prevent strains. One such exercise is the glute stretch, which helps relieve lower back pain, recommended by a licensed massage therapist and a certified health and wellness coach James Moore.
“When your back hurts, do this stretch! It helps stretch the glute muscles! The glutes can be a key factor in lower back pain, they alongside many others play key roles in supporting the pelvis by stabilising and moving the hip joint internally and externally. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat up to 3x! FOLLOW to relax your body!” he said in a post on Instagram.
Does the stretch help?
Notably, the glutes are the strongest and longest muscle group in your body, commonly referred to as the hips or the butt. There are three muscles that make up the glutes region: gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and the gluteus minimus. These three muscles always work in tandem and help you perform movements such as lifting, rotating, and extending your legs.
This stretch is good and may relieve many cases of back pain, said Dr Sudhir Kumar, neurologist, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad. “However, this stretch will not solve all cases of back pain and may be counter-productive in a few cases of back pain (and the pain may get worse). If the back pain is due to muscle spasms and weak muscles, this stretch can help. On the other hand, many cases of back pain are due to slipped discs and resulting compression of lumbar nerves (that travel from the back to the legs). In such cases, back extension exercises are preferable,” he said.
Some cases of back pain are due to vitamin D deficiency and osteoporosis. “It is obvious that unless we correct the underlying deficiency or give the appropriate treatment, pain would not go away,” Dr Kumar mentioned.
So, it is important that a person suffering from back pain first get evaluated by a neurologist and a physiotherapist, so that the root cause is identified. “After that, the most specific exercise and any other medical treatment can be appropriately advised,” said Dr Kumar.
