Here's what you should consider (Photo: Getty Images/Thinkstock)The final two months of the year often mark a time of renewal and motivation. Everyone wants to enter the new year feeling healthier, fitter, and more confident. What will make for a sensible strategy? We reached out to Dr Aniket Mule, Consultant, Internal Medicine, KIMS Hospitals, Thane.
What kind of changes help?
The strategy should include a healthy combination of nutritious food, regular physical activity, and good habits. “First step is to develop reasonable, rather than radical habits. In fact, even small changes in your habits (up to two months or so), can lead to big changes with respect to energy levels, skin health, and body composition,” said Dr Mule.
Recommending a program that covers the trifecta of cardio training, strength training, and stretching, Dr Mule said: “You could see results even within eight weeks of starting a program like this. A good example of a cardio program could be to brisk walk, run for fun, or ride a bike for about 30 minutes a day. This type of program helps to kick-start your metabolism.”
If it can be coupled with a strength program – even just two to three times a week – your body may start to develop those muscles and reorganise your posture. “This is when fitness will begin to produce visual and feeling effects. Stretching or yoga are also great for supporting recovery and body flexibility,” added Dr Mule.
How significant is diet in attaining this aim?
Most individuals do not realise just how much nutrition affects their energy and their looks. According to Dr Mule, eating fresh, whole foods, reducing processed sugar, and refined carbohydrates can create a significant difference. “A diet of lean proteins, fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds keeps skin glowing and maintains good health. Proper hydration and adequate intake of good fats, such as those in nuts or olive oil, can provide the skin with a natural glow,” said Dr Mule.

What else can help?
Sleep, stress levels, and sun protection are just as crucial. Sleeping well helps the body recover, regulate hormones, and achieve glowing skin. “Managing stress through a breath exercise, journaling, or spending time outdoors can help prevent stress-induced breakouts or fatigue. Wearing sunscreen every day promotes healthy skin and protects against premature ageing,” said Dr Mule.
Your body reminds you every day that care isn’t occasional, it’s consistent. A couple of months of concerted effort can lay the foundation for lasting habits and a visible change, both internal and external.
